Our 2024 Halloween & Día de los Muertos/Day of the Dead craft, baking and sensory play range includes a Sugar Skull Play Kit!

Day of the Dead is an interesting holiday celebrated in central and southern Mexico on 1st & 2nd of November (not to be confused with Halloween). The popular Calavera/Sugar Skull is a symbol used in Mexican culture to honour the souls of the dead. Many believe that the gates of heaven open at midnight on 31st October and the spirits of all deceased children reunite with their families for 24 hours. On 2nd November the spirits of adults come down to enjoy the festivities as well.  Sugar art was brought to Mexico by Italian missionaries in the 17th century. At the time, Mexico was abundant in sugar production - but lacked the resources to import European church decorations - and so learned how to make sugar art for their religious festivities. Sugar figures of angels, sheep and sugar skulls date back to the Colonial Period in the 18th century.*

Those who wish to partake in Día de los Muertos can do so through respectful play, crafts and learning about the origins of the Day of the Dead.  Use florals, crystals, sprinkles, stones, gems and other loose parts to decorate your playdough, clay and cookie creations.

Sugar Skull Bio Cutter Product Information

We 3d print our bio cutters from PLA, which is a plant-based bioplastic derived from renewable resources, such as corn starch, tapioca root or sugarcane.  This bio cutter will withstand wet sensory bases, like water beads and fizzy potion play, just remember to HAND WASH and immediately dry after use to prevent moisture absorption and warping. We don’t recommend immersing in liquid for long periods but a little splash and fizz will be fine.  PLA is not hydrophobic and may absorb colours from paint and and fizz.  Dimensions: 10.5cm x 7.8cm.

Air Drying Clay Product Information

Educational Colours Air Drying Clay is ready to use. This modelling material can be used with our Bio Cutters and Wooden Stamps to create learning materials, ornaments, keepsakes, jewellery, ornaments and figurines. No baking is required, object will set hard when left to dry in open air. Drying time varies according to thickness and climatic conditions. The use of wet hands or wet brush whilst shaping will assist in creating smooth texture. Objects can be painted and finished once dry. Ensure unused Air Drying Clay is resealed airtight in the package to retain malleable consistency. Air drying clay is non-toxic and gluten free. Suitable for ages 3+.  Choking hazard, small parts.  Wash hands after use and do not allow children to ingest the clay.
